Let’s be real for a second: the thought of a family photo session at the beach can feel a little… daunting. You’re worried about the sand, the salt, the nap schedules, and whether or not your toddler is going to decide that today is the day they strictly communicate through interpretive screaming.
I get it. But as a photographer, I’m here to tell you that the “perfect” photos don’t come from perfect behavior—they come from genuine connection. Here are my top tips for a beach session that is actually (I promise!) fun for the whole family.
Embrace the Bribery Policy
I’ll go first: I am a total sucker for ice cream. If my family promised me a double scoop, I’d do just about anything they asked! If your kids are food-motivated, lean into it. Whether it’s lollipops for a quick “mood reset” or a promised trip to the shave ice stand afterward, an incentive goes a long way.
Pro Tip: If you want the bribery handled for you, my Experience Sessions come with a curated Snack Pack. No shopping, no packing, just happy kids with full bellies.
Work With the “Jet Lag” Advantage
Most of my clients are visiting from a few time zones away. If you’re coming from the West Coast, you’re already on “early” time! Sunrise sessions are often the best for kids because they’re “up and at ’em” anyway. If your kids are night owls, we’ll aim for sunset. The key is to pick the time that aligns with when your kids are at their happiest, not just when the light is pretty.

Save the Splash for Last
We usually save the water for the very end of the session once we’ve checked off the “must-have” shots. But here’s the secret: if your little one decides to go for a premature dip, we rock with it! Some of the most magical photos are the ones where kids are just being kids—wet, sandy, and completely joyful.
Skip the “Fussy” Accessories
When it comes to beach fashion, less is more. Elaborate button-ups, belts, suspenders, or tiny hair clips can be a nightmare to keep in place in the ocean breeze. The more accessories there are, the more there is to lose or fuss over. Stick to comfortable, flowing fabrics that allow your kids to move freely.
Your Only Job: Have Fun
This is my most important rule. Parents, please let your kids be kids. If you spend the whole session stressed out, pointing at the camera and telling them to “smile,” you’ll end up with photos where you look like you want to strangle them!
It is my job to get them to look and laugh. It is your job to look at your partner, play with your children, and enjoy the sunset. I promise I will get the shot—just focus on having fun, and the smiles will follow naturally.
Ready for a No-Stress Experience?
If the idea of planning snacks and managing kids sounds like too much work for your vacation, my Experience Sessions were made for you. They’re perfect for families who don’t love traditional “posed” shoots and just want to have a great time at the beach. I bring the treats, I bring the fun, and you get the memories.
